Practical Color Mixing

3 DAYS - Monday-Wednesday - $300.00 USD
See below for dates

Cost is $300.00 USD, which includes soft drinks, coffee, tea and lunch.
Class will run from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
A non-refundable $75.00 USD deposit is required to hold a spot, and the remaining $225.00 USD is due two weeks prior to the start of the workshop.
Payment is accepted by personal check, money order, cashier's check or by credit card or e-check by PayPal's secure server using the links below the chosen date.

Class size is limited to 3 students.

This workshop will teach you how to mix any color you need - every time.

The concepts presented will be of enormous benefit to the carver of any skill level. And I feel strongly that these fundamentals should be learned early in the beginner's study alongside the basic carving techniques. Painting should not be feared. All colors behave in a specific and predictable manner and understanding how colors behave will significantly lessen the learning curve.

This intensive 3-day seminar will consist of the following:

  • The Fallacy of the "Three Color Primary" System
  • Color Wheel Basics
  • The Six Color Primary Palette
  • Color Temperature
  • Color Bias
  • Lightfastness, Transparency & Opacity
  • The Color Index Number - What It Is & Why You Need to Know
  • Pre-mixed, Or "Designer" Colors & What to Be Aware of When Using Them
  • "Earth" Colors (Siennas, Umbers & Ochres) - Tube vs. Mixing Your Own
  • Values & Contrasts - Why They're Important & How to Use Them
  • Mixing Your Own "Darks" (Greys & Almost Blacks) & Their Advantage Over Tube Blacks

You will do exercises using these concepts that includes:

  • Mixing color charts using combinations of the "Six Primaries"
  • Mixing color charts using various combinations of complimentary colors
  • Mixing color charts of "darks" (greys & almost blacks) using complimentary colors

Included in the cost of the class will be pre-printed blank charts for the mixing exercises, printed notes of the fundamentals taught & a 3-ring binder for permanent storage.

You are encouraged to bring your own paints for comparison & demonstration.
You are not expected to have a large selection of red, yellows, blues, etc., but if you have them, by all means, bring them!
The purpose of this seminar is to teach you how to work with the pigments you already have, why (or why not) you achieve the mix you are looking to make, and how to make an informed choice of additional colors to add to your palette.
There will be additional colors available for purchase, if desired, to "complete" your palette.

This workshop does not teach how to apply paint, but how to mix your colors. If time allows, a demonstration will be given on using and applying different values to achieve realism & softness. This is a practical application of the concepts taught in the workshop.

By the end of the workshop you should be able to correctly choose your mixing colors based on your new-found knowledge of their characteristics to make the mix you want - every time.

This seminar is also offered outside of the scheduled dates by arrangement to suit your schedule.
E-mail me with your desired date to schedule a workshop.
Cost & amenities will remain the same.
A minimum of 3 students is required for specially scheduled classes at the studio
